March for Women's Suffrage, New York City, 1912
Based on a black-and-white photograph in the Library of Congress, this quilt depicts a New York City parade for women's suffrage that went up Fifth Avenue from Washington Square to Carnegie Hall on May 4, 1912.
Political marches like this challenged social conventions that saw women parading on the street as prostitutes. Children were included to demonstrate that mothers also deserved voting rights. Sashes and banners were in suffrage colors of yellow, white, violet, and green.
