This quilt is inspired by Matisse's odalisque paintings and the #MeToo Movement. Today critics view Orientalism as imbued with colonialism, and see artists' fascination with the exotic trappings of a seraglio as sexually exploitative of women. But no matter what fantasy Matisse puts his model in, she is not his sex slave. She is free to dance or depart. This quilt celebrates her sensuality and questions how we should view odalisque paintings.
